Coccidiosis in Goats: Scientific Dosing Guide for Oregano Oil and Natural Prevention

IMPORTANT HEALTH DISCLAIMER: While I have a formal background in Pre-Veterinary Medicine, Biology, and Chemistry, I am not a licensed veterinarian. This information is based on personal farm experience and scientific research. Always consult with your licensed veterinarian before starting any new treatment protocol, especially in cases of severe disease or decline.
A breakout of Coccidiosis in your dairy or meat goats is never fun. Even with the best livestock management practices, cases still occur, especially during times of high stress like weaning. This article provides a scientifically-vetted approach toward the natural treatment and prevention of Coccidiosis, leveraging my background in Chemistry and Herbalism.
🔬 The Science of Coccidiosis in Goats
Every goat, at some point, is exposed to Coccidia oocysts—it's inevitable. The goal is keeping the parasitic numbers in control. Coccidia are highly pathogenic protozoa, with species like Eimeria arloingi and E. ninakohlyakimovae causing severe disease, especially when they infect the lower gut.
Pathogenesis: A single ingested oocyst can result in 1–2 million oocysts after about a month, rapidly overwhelming a goat’s system, especially kids.
High-Risk Times: I have noticed as a goat breeder that the most problematic time is during or immediately after human-intervention weaning, regardless of the kids' age.
⚠️ WARNING: Oregano Essential Oil (OEO) Safety is Paramount
We choose to use therapeutic-grade Oregano Essential Oil (OEO) due to its natural anti-parasitic properties, but precision and safety are non-negotiable. My background demands that I provide clear warnings and exact dosing protocols.
NEVER. I Repeat NEVER use any other oregano essential oil for internal use on livestock other than therapeutic grade. As a wholesale distributor of CPTG DōTERRA essential oils, I have relied on this quality for over a decade on my livestock and pets.
Critical Safety Rules (Do Not Ignore!)
Dilution is Mandatory: ALWAYS dilute at the rate of 2 ml liquid (olive oil) per drop of oregano essential oil. Never administer OEO undiluted.
Duration: NEVER use therapeutic grade oregano essential oil for more than 1 week at a time. Continue treatment for a few days after symptoms have stopped.
Pregnancy Risk: DO NOT use on Pregnant does or does in EARLY lactation. Oregano essential oil can cause oxidative damage to the fetus or newborn kids.
Administration: Administer with a Vaccine Syringe WITHOUT the needle, slowly injecting directly into the far back of the pallet.
🧪 NATURAL TREATMENT for ACUTE Coccidiosis
Method uses precise, measured amounts of therapeutic-grade OEO diluted in olive oil.
Dosing Protocol & Calculation Guide
Use the dosage estimate of 1 ml (1/2 drop oregano EO) per goat/kid, four times daily for a maximum of 7 days.
Example Calculation (for 1 Kid, 7 Days):
Daily Dose: 1 ml olive oil + 1/2 drop OEO, administered 4x daily.
Total for 7 Days: (4 ml olive oil + 2 drops OEO) x 7 days = 28 ml olive oil + 14 drops OEO.
Note: You will most likely only use this for 3-5 days. Calculating for 7 days ensures you have a master treatment batch ready.
| Treatment Stage | Dose | Frequency |
| Active Symptoms | 1 ml | 4x daily (4 hr intervals) |
| Day AFTER Symptoms Stop | 1 ml | 3x daily (6 hr intervals) |
| Next Few Days AFTER | 1 ml | 2x daily (12 hr intervals) |
As long as the stool STAYS solid for the next few days AFTER symptoms stop, discontinue treatment of oregano essential oil. For young KIDS, DO NOT exceed 3-4 ml per dose, as their rumen capacity is limited.
🌱 NATURAL PREVENTION for Coccidiosis
While acute cases require direct treatment, prevention is managed through supportive digestive herbs offered FREE CHOICE during times of stress or weaning.
As an herbalist and wild forager, I recommend a blend of specific herbs mixed at a 1:1 ratio in powder form with 1 lb of kelp granules.
Supplies List of Supportive Digestive Herb Blend:
(Optional: Use in conjunction with a medicated feed containing Decoquinate or Rumensin.)
Wild Foraging & Sourcing
Several of these herbs—including Yarrow, Mullein, Slippery Elm, Yucca, and Stinging Nettle—grow wild on our farm in Middle TN.
As a reminder from a seasoned forager: Always identify plants correctly BEFORE wild foraging! Here is the link to the post I made on how to identify and harvest wild Mullein and watch the video below on how to identify mullein.
